What GCSE Maths Examiners Look For

Understanding how examiners mark GCSE Maths papers can help students gain more marks.

Clear Mathematical Working

Examiners look for:

  • correct mathematical steps

  • logical reasoning

  • clear presentation

Showing working makes it easier for examiners to award marks.

Method Marks

Many questions award method marks.

Even if the final answer is wrong, correct steps can still earn marks.

Accuracy Marks

Accuracy marks are awarded for the correct final answer.

Students must be careful with calculations.

Clear Answers

Final answers should be:

  • clearly written

  • in the correct format

  • placed in the answer box

Examiner Advice

As a maths examiner, one of the most common issues I see is students not writing enough working.

Always show the steps used to reach your answer.

NB: Calculator is not substitute for working out - evidence your methods through writing them down
